Under NARE (Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition) ekspedisjonen 1978-79 ble Bouvetøya kartlagt, og flere forskere var involvert i forskjellig forskningsvirksomhet på øya og områdene rundt.
Det ble satt opp en meteorologisk stasjon som var bemannet i to måneder, og dette var et av de viktigste norske bidrag til det verdensomspennende værvarslingsprosjektet ”Global Atmospheric Research Programme”.
During the Norwegian Antarctic Research Expedition in 1978-79 Bouvetøya was charted and several scientists where involved in different research activity on the island and its surrounding area. A meteorological station was established on the island, which was an important Norwegian contribution to the Global Atmospheric Research Programme.
